Learning Shabbos Melachos Print E-mail

ImageWe observe Shabbos every week and we refrain from questionable activities (melachos) that would cause us to accidentally break Shabbos. But we do not necessarily understand the whys and hows of the melachos.

There are quiet a few resources out there for parents and children to learn about the Shabbos melachos and what they entail. But a great introduction to these melachos is through captivating flash cards that organize the melachos into the four main categories:

  1. Order of Bread
  2. Order of Garments
  3. Order of Hides
  4. Order of Construction

The order of bread explains the various processes involved in making bread for the mishkan (portable sanctuary) from plowing the earth, sowing the seeds, to cooking/baking. According to Rashi, though these processes have to do with making dyes for the tapestries in the mishkan.

The order of garments explains the activities involved in creating the curtains and draperies that cover the inner sanctuary, and this involves shearing the sheep/goat for wool, scouring to sewing and mending.

The order of hides explains the various activities involved in producing the waterproof outer coverings made of tachash skins of the inner sanctuary, and this begins with trapping an animal through cutting the processed hide along scored lines.

The order of construction explains the various activities involved in actually building the sanctuary out of wooden planks and boards, and this includes writing, erasing, building and demolishing.

These cards can be used as a group learning activity sorting each card according to their order/category (much like the secular 7's card game). Each card has a picture, a Hebrew-English name of the melacha and a number from 1 to 39.

A set of 44 cards, with a varying number of cards grouped according to these four categories is available for browsing and purchasing at Torahflashcards.com .
