Darwin's theory and the Tower of BabylonWhy don't Jews believe in Darwin's theory of evolution? Paleontology and anthropology seem to support Darwin. Otherwise, how do you explain the skeletons of primates that are intermediate stages between monkeys and man? Thank you for your attention. Brian, graduate student, anthropology, UK Dear Brian, Rabbi Yudel Yosef Hurwitz of blessed memory, known as the Novardoker Elder, said that if Darwin would have met Rabbi Yisroel Salanter (Rabbi Hurwitz's teacher and spiritual master), he would never have believed that man came from an ape. Continuing that train of thought, I'll add that Darwin lived in a society that acted like animals, so his theory seemed quite logical under his personal circumstances. As far as the apparent paleontological evidence goes, the Yerushalmi Talmud in Tractate "Avoda Zara" tells us that the evil people who revolted against G-d in the building of The Tower of Babylon (see Gen. 11:1-9 and above illustration) underwent a metamorphosis and became monkeys - that clearly explains the transition skeletons. Contrary to Darwin, the people became monkies but the monkies did not become people. Please accept this unsolicited bit of advice, Brian - change your major to biology or chemistry. Better still, there are plenty of outstanding Yeshivas in the UK. Yours with best wishes, Lazer Brody
