ImageJust over two months ago, on Rosh Chodesh Adar Bet, the Jewish world was shocked to the core after hearing of the horrific news from Jerusalem. Eight young boys had been struck down by a barbaric terrorist with their sefarim in their hands. Many of us sensed that it was all of Klal Yisrael that was attacked that night. Our enemies specifically chose to attack our two most precious possessions; our children and our Torah.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Our response must be to renew our commitment to what was attacked – through increasing our learning of Torah.

All of us, no matter what our hashkafa, dress, language or location – learn the same Torah, handed down by Moshe Rabeinu at Har Sinai all those years ago. The time has come that this Shavuot we again join together ‘k’ish echad b’lev echad’, like one man with one heart.

It is with this in mind that the OneFamily Fund is organising a Global Shavuot Learnathon, where individuals, shuls and schools around the world are pledging to learn a number of hours of Torah on Leil Shavuot while seeking sponsorship from family and friends.

All funds raised from the Learnathon will be directed by the OneFamily Fund to support those affected by the attack on the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva & High School (also known as Yashlats).

The current list of major partners in this project include Tribe UK, The Orthodox Union, World Bnei Akiva, NCSY, Mayanot, Torah MiTzion and Aish.com.

We appeal to Schools, Shuls, Batei Midrash, Yeshivot and Seminaries worldwide to assist us by having a Shavuot Learnathon in their local communities or having their Tikun Leil Shavuot program dedicated to this purpose.

join this important effort.

About Yashlats:

Otherwise known as the Mercaz HaRav high school or Yeshivat Yerushalayim L’Tzeirim, this high school for 300 students based in Jerusalem is affectionally known as Yashlats. The Yeshiva was established in 5724/1963 by Rabbi Yaakov Filber, one of the foremost students of Rav Tzvi Yehuda HaCohen Kook. Yashlats is considered as one of the leading Yeshiva High Schools in Israel, both in its religious & educational standards. Famous graduates include Rav Yaakov Shapira (current Head of Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva), Rav Motti Elon (former Head of Yeshivat HaKotel and leader of the Mibreshit movement) and Rav Shmuel Eliyahu (chief rabbi of Tzfat). The current Rosh Yeshivah is Rabbi Yerachmiel Weiss.

On the night of Rosh Chodesh Adar Bet, March 6 2008, a terrorist entered a library Yashlats shares with older students from the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva and murdered eight students. Five of the students were enrolled in Yashlats while three were studying at the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva. Eleven more students were injured while dozens more were direct eyewitnesses to the attack and suffered severe emotional trauma.
