The laws of kashrut regarding animals, fish and fowl are outlined for us in the parsha of the week. The Torah makes strong emphasis on the word “l’havdil” – to distinguish, to separate – in its discussion of these laws.

This year we who are fortunate enough to live in Jerusalem will celebrate a “Purim mshulash” – a triple, three-day long Purim. The megillah will be read on Friday and according to most opinions, alms for the poor will also be distributed on that day. Shabat will have the Purim Torah reading and the recitation of the special Purim prayer –al hanisim- in the prayer services and the blessings after eating the Shabat meals.

After all of the tumultuous events of the book of Shmot – the Exodus, the revelation at Sinai and the granting of the Torah, the event of the Golden Calf and of the construction of the Mishkan/Tabernacle – the Lord calls out, so to speak, to Moshe from the inner recesses of the Mishkan/Tabernacle.

The conclusion of the book of Shmot describes the attainment of Israel in having the Divine Presence rest upon the Jewish people through the medium of the Mishkan that it had built in the desert of Sinai. Ramban states that this accomplishment of having the Divine Spirit dwell amongst the people of Israel was equal to that state of being during the period of the Avot, the patriarchs and matriarchs of Israel, when the Divine Spirit was resident in their tents and homes.
